Where Can I Find Ideas for Victorian Costumes?
Well I'm not sure where to start, but I guess the beginning is as good a place as any. When I first became involved in the costuming aspect of Cowboy Action Shooting, I must have asked this question a dozen or more times. I was lucky enough to get pointed in the direction of the Carolina Belle’s web site affectionately known as the Belle Alley. There I met many other women who were all interested and involved in costuming for CAS to some degree. One such lady was Josie Smith, aka: Greeneyed Gypsy SASS #60086 who I became fast friends with. We frequently shared museum websites, auction sites, digital libraries and databases of antique clothing covering the SASS era. Sadly there had been no place that we had found that had a large collection of dresses that were easily accessible and pertained to the specific years we were most interested in. During one of our frequent phone conversations, Josie and I were lamenting the lack of available dressmaking research information and images. Wishing that we had access to ladies periodicals from this time period that could be shared with others without significant cost or damage to the often delicate books and magazines, we began to hatch a crazy idea. What if we began purchasing antique periodicals with the intention to create a digital library of our own? We could concentrate on the fashions nearest and dearest to our hearts, the years 1869-1903 the time line for the sport we love. Well that seems like a life time ago, and after many, many phone calls and hours spent combing Ebay later, we have the wonderful beginning of a dream come true.
We have chosen to name this endeavor the LaSalle Library for Beth Carson, aka: Lady LaSalle who is the driving force behind the acquisition and editing of our collection. Around here, we call her “The Queen of Acquisitions”. These digital image CD’s are now available through this website. Currently, we have the years 1870 through 1891 available for purchase along with a few special CD's such as complete years of LaMode Illustree and Cabinet Cards. Each contains anywhere from 300-1000+ images from original fashion publications from that year. What kind of images you ask? Well there are hats and dresses, undergarments and dresses, hairstyles and dresses, accessories and dresses, fashion plates and descriptions of the dresses including suggested colors and fabric for construction. Did I mention that there are dress pictures? Well it’s been a long time in the making and we are tickled with the response to our efforts so far. It is our hope that the LaSalle Library will give anyone at all interested in historical costume exactly what they are looking for to inspire, document, and who knows, they just might find a few wonderful surprises
along the way.
Fashionably Yours,
Lady LaSalle
