Over the past few years I have dabbled in recovering parasols---both antique and reproductions, but mostly for myself. Some of my examples you can see above. People have come up to me asking who did my parasol or where did I get it from, and they are astounded when I tell them that I did it myself. After much soul searching and many discussions with me, myself, and I, I have decided to start selling recovered parasols. From time to time you'll see new parasols here on the site for sale, but I will make custome parasols as well.
All of my parasols are lined, and I will make a custom parasol to match your latest dress creation if you send me your fabric and trims. For the reproduction parasols, I use the Sutler parasols with the straight wooden handles. If you have an antique parasol frame that you want recovered, I'll do that too, but the extra shipping costs must be paid for by you.
Expect AT A MINIMAL 4 week turn around from the time that you place the order (or until I recieve your antique parasol frame), until the finished parasol is shipped. It may take longer depending on holidays and busy costuming periods of the year---especially December! If I have too many orders or if there is a delay in shipping, I will contact you by email.
There is no set price on the parasols, since each one is different with different fabrics and trims. I will ship USPS Priority Mail ONLY!!!! I have had two parasols completely broken in half when I used UPS, and 1 parasol is still missing from using FedEx. After putting so much time and energy into something, its heartbreaking to have it broken and lost.
One of my past custom parasols I did was for Fannie Kickinshoot to match her pink and black dress. The antique frame that she bought was in great shape, but the silk was shattered. She sent me all of the fabric, trims, and buttons and I got started. She also gave me artistic license, and the design the parasol. I came up with what you see above, and it blew her away. But the parasol wasn't complete until she wore her dress and carried it with her. She looked so pretty..........just like an angel.
Another lady that I recovered an antique parasol for is Catawba Cate. This folding parasol was also repainted using two different colors to bring out the beautiful shades of the fabrics. It was made to match her Ohio State dress, right down to the handmade carnation details that stand up along the parasol's edge when it is fully open.
I have decided to reproduce an antique parasol that I saw on ebay as a example to show you how I work from start to finish. I'll be using a Sutler parasol (unless I can find a nice antique parasol with a wooden handle). This is the design that I'll be following:
